  Today's excursion explores the spiritual birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and the island's first great ancient kingdom.

  Begin at Mihintale, a sacred hilltop sanctuary revered as the cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhism. According to tradition, this is where Mahinda Thera, son of Emperor Ashoka of India, introduced Buddhism to King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC. Climb the ancient stone stairway leading to shrines, stupas, meditation caves, and panoramic viewpoints offering sweeping views across forests and reservoirs.

  Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Anuradhapura, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the first capital of ancient Sri Lanka. Explore vast archaeological complexes that reveal the grandeur of a civilization that flourished for over a millennium. Visit towering stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, ancient monastic complexes, royal palaces, ceremonial ponds, and sophisticated irrigation systems that demonstrate remarkable engineering achievements.

  Polonnaruwa & Sigiriya

  After breakfast, set out to discover two of Sri Lanka's most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  The morning is dedicated to exploring Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital that succeeded Anuradhapura. Wander through remarkably preserved ruins that showcase the artistic and architectural achievements of the kingdom during its golden age. Visit the Royal Palace complex, Audience Hall, Lotus Bath, and the magnificent Quadrangle, home to intricately carved shrines and temples.

  The highlight of Polonnaruwa is the celebrated Gal Vihara, where four magnificent Buddha images have been carved directly into a granite rock face. These masterpieces are regarded as some of the finest examples of Buddhist sculpture in South Asia.

  In the afternoon, visit the spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Asia. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains, this enormous rock outcrop was transformed into a royal citadel by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD.

Set atop a rocky hill, the temple consists of five caves adorned with vibrant Buddhist murals covering over 2,000 square meters of wall and ceiling surfaces.
